It was a sad day for the competitive community in what was one of the earliest and most successful online tournament websites is shutting down. Even prior to Team Beyond and Beyond.net the Gamebattles arenas ran Halo from Halo 3 on to Halo 5: Guardians before almost exclusively being for Call of Duty. It was so well oiled as a machine and business that it was integrated into Call of Duty. You could play others in official matches through the game without ever looking at the site or application.

I expect this change comes form Microsoft's acquisition of Activision. Microsoft actually already owns a tournament organizing platform called Smash.gg and so this comes at no surprise, but it is arguable which one is better in both branding and legacy. Most of you probably have never heard of Smash.gg whereas Gamebattles has been central to the culture of competitive esports for first person shooters.

Activision Blizzard is planning to sunset and no longer host the GameBattles platform. The company is committed to providing account holders the opportunity to transact any balance through pay-to-enter competitions and micro-transactions before January 15th, 2024. Thank you to the GameBattles community for your loyalty.
